Managing lymphoedema

What is lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is characterised by the swelling that occurs when the demand for lymphatic drainage exceeds the capacity of the lymphatic circulation. 
Lymphoedema may be a side effect of cancer treatment, such as radiation therapy or removing some lymph nodes/vessels, which can damage the lymphatic system.

Symptoms of Lymphoedema might include:

• A feeling of heaviness in affected area
• The skin feels tight - clothing may feel tighter
• The skin may feel hotter than other areas
• Aching, Pins and needles, Swelling.

Short term swelling often occurs after surgery, but this generally settles over a few weeks. Not all swelling is chronic lymphoedema.

Compression bras are designed to help prevent an increase in swelling or following CLT, in combination with exercise and massage.
